What are London homes like compared with homes abroad?
The differences depend on the property, but room proportions, storage, stairs and outdoor space often deserve closer attention than the headline bedroom count. Period houses, converted flats and modern apartments offer very different ways of living.
A family house may be spread over several floors. A large advertised floor area can include lower-ground rooms, attic space or circulation that may not meet your expectations. We look at where bedrooms sit, how living spaces connect and whether a study can function independently from family areas.
For flats, consider the entrance, lift, stairs and route for deliveries or a pushchair. A terrace or communal garden may be appealing, but establish access and use rights. Parking also needs checking: an attractive space outside the building is not evidence that you can park there or obtain a permit.
Heating, ventilation and cooling vary. Do not assume air-conditioning is present or that you can install it later without consent. If you have specific temperature, accessibility or work-from-home requirements, put them in the brief before viewing.
Furniture matters when relocating. Measure important items and consider access before arranging shipment. For rentals, confirm what “furnished” includes and what can be removed; for a purchase, establish which fixtures and fittings form part of the agreement. Sorting these details early can prevent an otherwise suitable home becoming difficult to use.
